Aviemore is central to the Cairngorms National Park, and provides a fantastic base for exploring the area around.  The town is the home of the Strathspey Steam Railway, a steam train line dating back to the late 1800’s and now operated as a visitor attraction by enthusiasts.  The line currently runs via Boat of Garten to Broomhill, offering a leisurely and very beautiful perspective of the Cairngorms and the River Spey as you travel along; plans are in place to extend the line to Grantown-on-Spey.  Close to Rowlands is the Cairngorm Brewery, brewing award winning beers like Wildcat and Trade Winds – brewery tours are available but just pop in and buy a selection of their brews to enjoy in the cottage!  For guests wishing to stay close to the cottage but enjoy the Highland air, there is an orbital footpath around Aviemore that passes through trees, under railway bridges, by rivers and streams and through the town.  Aviemore has an excellent range of shops, pubs, and restaurants so there is plenty of choices whether you wish to eat out or dine in.  Macdonald hotels have a number of hotels in the town, and for wet weather, days offer 2 pools at 2 different sites (Dalfaber and the Resort) as well as a cinema. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the Spey Valley Championship Golf Course at Dalfaber.

Cairngorms National Park has something to offer everyone.  Only 30 minutes drive from Inverness and well connected by rail and road, there is plenty for everyone.  Wintersports are available at Cairngorm Mountain, a short drive from Aviemore, and throughout the year the Cairngorms plateau provides walking and climbing for people looking to explore one of the last great wildernesses in the UK.  You may be lucky to see a ptarmigan, arguably Britain’s toughest bird, or deer that roam the mountains.  Wildlife abounds in the Cairngorms, a visit to the area is incomplete without calling in at the Loch Garten RSPB center to glimpse an osprey or go wild in the Highland Wildlife Park with the tigers and polar bears.  Speyside is also well known for its large number of whiskey distilleries with famous and not so famous brands all making a storing whiskey in varying quantities, with most offering tours and a wee dram!  Mountain biking is popular in the area, with numerous shops hiring and selling biking equipment nearby and Laggan Wolftrax providing an excellent range of trails, only 30 or so minutes drive from Aviemore.  In Carrbridge, Landmark Forest Adventure Park offers fun and exploration for children of all ages.
